Medical Cases

Elvis . 10 year old Male neutered cat

A. Elvis was brought to our clinic by his owner who had noticed a lack of appetite and weight loss for the last several days. Upon examination he was found to be lethargic, quite dehydrated and had a yellow tone to his skin. Blood tests were done and a diagnosis of HEPATIC LIPIDOSIS was made. This is a disease which affects the liver and is caused by excess fat cells being transported from body fat to the liver. He was immediately hospitalized and put on intravenous fluids and intravenous medication. A nasoesophageal tube was initially placed to provide him with some nutrition. This was later changed to an esophagostomy tube in order to get larger amounts of food into the patient. Slowly but surely Elvis improved and by the third week of hospitalization he was eating on his own. Repeat blood tests showed that his liver was starting to work again and he had started to gain weight. After a few more days hospitalization he was sent home and he continues to do fine.

Kitty Cat . 4 year old female cat.

A. Kitty cat had not been feeling well for the last week. She had stopped eating and her belly seemed distended. Her owner also mentioned that a bad odor was present in her hind end. She had been in heat about 1 month ago. Upon examination she was found to be quite dehydrated, feverish, and had an enlarged abdomen. She also had a pussy discharge from her genital area. A presumptive diagnosis of PYOMETRA was made. Pyometra is an infection of the womb. It usually occurs in non-spayed females ( cats and dogs) in the first 1-3 months after a heat. Kitty Cat was placed on IV fluids, blood tests were done and she was taken to surgery. The surgery was quite delicate given the friability of her enlarged uterus. However, she came through the operation fine and recovered uneventfully.

"Kiku" 9 year old Miniature Pinscher.

A. Kiku had not been feeling well. He had stopped eating and was occasionally vomiting . He had also lost a large amount of weight in the last month. Upon examination Kiku was found to be lethargic and very dehydrated. Evidence of recent weight lost was also present. Blood tests and a urinalysis were immediately done and a diagnosis of "DIABETIC KETOACIDOSIS" was made. Diabetic ketoacidosis is an advanced stage of diabetes mellitus. This disease is caused by the lack of insulin production by the pancreas. This causes sugar to build up in the blood and serious metablic derangements affecting many body systems. If left untreated it can eventually lead to death. Kiku was immediately hospitalized placed on intravenous and started on insulin injections. After 6 days hospitalization he was sent home. He is now being treated with insulin injections by his owner at home and is doing very well.
PS. Kiku did well for more than a year, Unfortunately he passed away from an unrelated illness, he is dearly missed by his owners.
